Coach For Tomorrow

The Coach For Tomorrow programme gives school pupils and college students who want to progress in sport the chance to gain real coaching experience. Run by the Rangers Charity Foundation in partnership with local authority and further education institutions, the programme delivers a flexible but structured pathway that helps young people step into roles within sport and physical activity.

What the Programme Involves

Each participant attends one morning a week (over a full term) and takes part in practical coaching delivery, session planning and shadowing experienced coaches. In addition, the programme sometimes offers alternative formats to suit different needs.
Participants will:

  • Assist in planning and delivering coaching sessions to younger players.

  • Shadow and learn from qualified coaches about behaviour management, session structure and sporting values.

  • Gain insight into sport-based careers, including club community work, grassroots delivery and development roles.
Alongside this, mentors support each young person to reflect on their experience and build a portfolio of evidence to help future progression.

Why the Programme Matters

Many young people enjoy sport and want to turn their passion into a career. However, they often lack opportunities to gain relevant experience or understand how to move into coaching roles. The Coach For Tomorrow programme helps by:

  • Providing genuine, meaningful coaching opportunities in a safe environment.

  • Building confidence, leadership and communication skills that apply on and off the pitch.

  • Opening doors into sport-based employment, further education or vocational training.
Furthermore, by linking pupils and students with community coaches and institutions, the program builds networks and connections for future success.

Who Can Take Part?

The programme is open to senior pupils in school and students in college who have aspirations to work in coaching, sport or physical activity. No previous experience is required, but participants should have enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in working with others. Schools and colleges can nominate or refer students, or young people can apply directly.
