From Disengaged to Determined: Casey and Shelby’s Journey to a New Future

Tue 31st March 2026

At the Rangers Charity Foundation, programmes like CashBack Towards New Futures are designed to give young people the chance to reset, rebuild and move towards a more positive future. By combining employability support, qualifications and mentoring, the programme helps participants develop the confidence and skills needed to take their next steps.

For Casey and Shelby, that journey didn’t start with CashBack but it’s where things really began to change.

Both young people found school difficult, struggling to engage in a traditional classroom environment. Looking back, Casey is honest about how little time she spent there.

“I never really went to school, like, hardly ever. It just wasn’t for me.”

Shelby had a similar experience, often feeling disconnected and frustrated.

“I wasn’t settled in school at all. I’d argue with teachers, walk out of classes… I just didn’t engage. I’d rather have been out with my pals.”

Their first introduction to the Foundation came through our Hub in the Community programme at Whitehill Secondary School. It was an early step that helped them begin to reconnect in a more supportive setting.

After building those initial relationships, both were encouraged to take part in our Qualifications Scotland Programme of Wider Achievement before progressing onto CashBack.

Casey remembers it simply starting with a conversation between friends.

“I first heard about CashBack through Shelby. She asked if I wanted to come along after having a chat with our Hub Officer, Jamie McMillan, and I just thought, ‘Aye, I’ll go with you.’”

That decision quickly proved to be a turning point. What stood out most was how different it felt from school.

“It’s probably the best decision I’ve made. You actually enjoy coming here because you can have a laugh, but they understand you and support you as well.”

From the beginning, both Casey and Shelby noticed a clear contrast in how they were supported. Instead of being left to figure things out on their own, they were guided through it.

Shelby explains how that made all the difference.

“It’s completely different from school. If you don’t understand something here, they’ll sit with you and help you through it. They don’t just expect you to get on with it.”

That support also created a space where they felt more comfortable asking for help which was something that hadn’t always been easy before. Casey reflects on how even working alongside each other helped build confidence.

“You don’t feel daft for asking for help. If one of us didn’t get something, we’d just sit together and work it out.”

As their confidence grew, so did their awareness of what they were achieving. What once felt out of reach began to feel possible.

Shelby highlights how the programme helped her start thinking differently about her future.

“We’ve done loads of qualifications; things like employability awards and stuff that actually helps you think about your future.”

For Casey, the impact was more gradual but just as important.

“You start building skills without even realising it. It gives you confidence, and you feel like you’re actually achieving something.”

Support with practical next steps has also been key. Through the CashBack programme, both have had opportunities to build CVs and prepare for employment.

As Shelby puts it:

“They’ve helped us with things like CVs and getting ready for jobs. It makes you feel more prepared for what comes next.”

A major part of their experience has been the relationships they’ve built along the way. The consistency and encouragement from staff created an environment where they felt comfortable and valued.

Shelby is quick to point out the difference this has made.

“Jamie was brilliant with us both at school and since coming on the CashBack programme all the staff here have been great. They always make sure you’re alright and have everything you need.”

For Casey, having that support network of both peers and staff has made it easier to keep showing up and staying engaged.

“It’s easier coming somewhere like this because you’re not on your own. You’ve got people around you who help.”

Even small, everyday moments contributed to that sense of belonging. Shelby smiles when thinking about the contrast with school.

“It’s the wee things like being asked if you want a cup of tea or something. It just makes it feel more relaxed and welcoming.”

Now, both Casey and Shelby are beginning to look ahead with a more positive mindset; something that once felt uncertain.

Casey sums it up simply, but powerfully.

“It’s a good opportunity. You’re getting qualifications, building life skills, and starting to think about your future.”

Their journey highlights how early support through Hub in the Community, continued learning through Wider Achievement, and the targeted intervention of the CashBack programme can work together to create real, lasting change.
