Joy of Moving
The Joy of Moving programme helps children aged 9–10 learn about healthy, active lifestyles in a fun and engaging way. It also encourages pupils to think positively about exercise and wellbeing from an early age. Our Foundation team delivers this national initiative in schools, combining movement, learning and play to inspire positive lifelong habits.
What is the Joy of Moving Programme?
The Joy of Moving programme runs for six weeks and gives children in Primary 5 and 6 the chance to learn while having fun. Each weekly session includes two parts, so pupils can stay focused and engaged:
- 45 minutes of practical football-based movement and games
- 45 minutes of classroom learning focused on health, nutrition and wellbeing
Ferrero funds the programme and the SPFL Trust supports its delivery. Every school year, around 1,800 children across Glasgow take part in the sessions.
What Children Learn
During each lesson, pupils explore important topics such as:
- The value of daily physical activity
- Healthy eating and balanced food choices
- How the body works
- The Eatwell Plate and food groups
- Hydration and energy
Teachers notice that lessons are enjoyable and easy to follow. As a result, pupils remember more and apply what they learn in their daily routines. In addition, they gain confidence and teamwork skills through shared activities.
Why Joy of Moving Makes a Difference
Many children struggle to meet the recommended levels of daily movement. However, the Joy of Moving programme gives them a simple, positive way to stay active. It helps by:
- Encouraging regular movement through fun activities
- Building confidence, teamwork and communication skills
- Supporting school learning in health and wellbeing
- Inspiring children to stay active outside of school
Furthermore, the sessions guide children to think about their daily choices and understand how these affect their long-term health.
Who Can Take Part?
The Joy of Moving programme takes place in primary schools and welcomes pupils of all abilities. Coaches adapt each session to meet the needs of every class. This approach ensures that all children can take part and feel included. Teachers often comment on how quickly pupils become engaged and enthusiastic.
