Scottish FA Extra Time

The Scottish FA Extra Time programme helps primary school children access fun after-school and holiday activities. Delivered by the Foundation, the programme supports children, families and local communities in Glasgow through food, play and learning.

What the Programme Offers

The programme runs after school hours, and during holidays, to support children and working parents alike. For example:

  • Pupils join activity clubs at their school and at the Ibrox Community Complex.

  • They enjoy physical activity, arts & crafts, healthy snacks and supervised time.

  • Extra Time also supports parents via a parent support group and referral to local services.

Who Can Take Part?

The programme is open to primary school-aged children and their families in three local schools: Ibrox Primary, St Saviours Primary and Riverside Primary. Participants benefit from free childcare-type provision. For many families, this support helps with work, training or study.

Why It Makes a Difference

Many families struggle with affordable childcare and organised activities outside school hours. However, Extra Time removes those barriers by:

  • Offering accessible and free clubs in a trusted local setting.

  • Giving children fun and structured activity that boosts health and wellbeing.

  • Enabling parents and carers to sustain or increase their working hours, take up training, or simply have some rest time.

In addition, the programme evaluates how organised activity can tackle food insecurity and improve mental health.

In Glasgow, the programme at the Ibrox Community Complex uses the new 11-aside 3G pitch and has developed strong links to schools and support services. For example, the parent support group includes access to trauma counselling and employability sessions. These features highlight how the programme goes beyond activities to deliver real life-skills and care.
