Barry Ferguson Pays Special Visit to Football Memories Group
Fri 15th May 2026
Rangers Football Club legend, Barry Ferguson, brought smiles, stories and plenty of laughter to the Rangers Charity Foundation’s Football Memories programme during a special visit recently.
The Foundation’s Football Memories programme supports older people living with dementia, Alzheimer’s and memory loss by using football memorabilia, photographs and shared discussion to spark conversation and reconnect participants with cherished memories of the game.
Barry spent time chatting with group members, sharing memories from his Rangers career and listening to stories from supporters about matches, players and unforgettable moments from years gone by.

Participants enjoyed the chance to ask questions, reminisce about famous Rangers occasions and speak with one of the club’s most iconic captains in an informal and welcoming setting.
Ferguson said:
“I loved visiting the Football Memories programme. It’s something that is close to me because I know people who have suffered from memory issues and I’ve got family members that have been impacted by dementia. It was a thoroughly enjoyable hour, and it was good to catch up and reminisce about my time at the Club.”
“Programmes like this are so important. You see the attendees having a cup of tea, a biscuit, a pie and everybody is chatting away. And as I said, I know quite a lot of people have suffered with memory problems, but to go and spend a bit of time with them and chat about Rangers, it’s made my day I have to be honest.”
The Football Memories sessions are designed to encourage social interaction, reduce isolation and help stimulate long-term memories through football conversation and memorabilia. The programme also provides valuable support for carers and family members attending alongside loved ones.
Group attendee Dougie Deans was delighted to meet the former Rangers captain and thanked him for taking the time to visit.
Dougie said:
“Football Memories has been great for me. I was a long-distance lorry driver so being able to get out and about and meet new people where I know we have something in common is really important for me. The first session was really welcoming, and everybody was fantastic to be around. The people I’ve met have been incredibly nice.”
“I care for my brother who has Alzheimer’s so getting to come along to the group twice a month gives me a wee break as well. Having a Rangers legend like Barry Ferguson coming in today was a big surprise but it was an amazing experience to be able to talk to him about his time at the Club.”
“I’d recommend the Football Memories group to anyone who was in the same position as me because it’s been amazing for me and has been as soon as I walked through the door.”
Former player visits are always a highlight for attendees, helping to create meaningful moments and spark further discussion among the group.

The Foundation’s Football Memories programme takes place on the second and last Friday of every month at the Ibrox Community Complex and is open to people living with dementia or memory loss, along with carers, family members and friends.
The Rangers Charity Foundation would also like to thank BOXT for their valued funding support of the Football Memories programme, helping the Foundation continue to provide meaningful sessions for participants and their families.
