Foundation Squad Head To Newcastle For EFDN Walking Football Tournament
Thu 1st June 2023
The Foundation was delighted to send a group of our Walking Football participants to Newcastle to participate in the European Football for Development Network (EFDN), Walking Football League Tournament in Newcastle.
The tournament took place at Cochrane Park in Newcastle on 1 June with clubs from across Europe making the journey to the north of England.
The teams were welcomed to Newcastle on 30 May with a welcome speech delivered by the Newcastle United Foundation before all attending teams sat down to dinner at St James’ Park.
With the tournament kicking off on 1 June, the Rangers Charity Foundation squad were drawn against teams from Real Betis, Schalke, Chelsea, Bohemians and Glasgow Life in their opening group.
They finished sixth in their group, but the squad achieved a win in their final game of the tournament and were presented with the Fair Play Award. All of the participants had a great time before making the journey back up to Scotland.
Walking Football is a fast-growing version of the sport which is non-contact and allows participants to play the game they love without the same risk of injury or level of exertion, whilst still boosting fitness.
As part of our partnership with EFDN, we offer people over the age of 50 the chance to take part in a free weekly Walking Football sessions at the Ibrox Community Complex (across the road from Ibrox) on Thursdays at 11am* – 1pm with the first hour being for playing football and the second for social time and refreshments.
