Helping Scotland’s Kids Beat Cancer
Thu 5th October 2017
The Foundation has enjoyed a special relationship with Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity (formerly Yorkhill Children’s Charity) for many years, donating cash, toys and equipment and supporting Christmas activities over many years.
This season (2017/18), we are focusing our financial support on the charity’s Schiehallion Appeal, which aims to help Scotland’s kids beat cancer, as well as funding Christmas activities to help bring some magic to the wards at this special time of year.
The Foundation has pledged to raise £10,000 for these projects which will make a real and lasting difference to the babies, children and young people treated at Scotland’s largest children’s hospital.
More than two thirds of children in Scotland with cancer are treated in Ward 2A and 2B at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, known affectionately as the Schiehallion Ward. Although 8 out of 10 children with cancer will survive beyond five years, cancer is still a leading cause of death of children in Scotland.
The Schiehallion Appeal aims to raise £500,000 to enhance the Schiehallion Clinical Trials Centre in the hospital and bring more of the latest, innovative cancer treatments to Scotland. Clinical trials give children access to a new type of treatment when conventional treatments have failed, giving young patients the best possible chance in their fight against cancer.
We’ll also continue our tradition of bringing some Christmas spirit to the wards by funding decorations for the hospital, including trees, baubles and lights. Staff, volunteers and players from the Club and Foundation will take time out to hang the decorations and of course the entire first team squad will also visit the hospital in the run up to Christmas.
Kirsten Sinclair, Director of Fundraising at Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity commented, “We are eternally grateful to the Rangers Charity Foundation and Rangers Football Club for their ongoing support over the years. This year, the support of the Rangers Charity Foundation will not only honour their annual tradition of helping to spread some festive cheer over the Christmas period, but they will also be supporting our current Schiehallion Appeal, to bring more of the latest cancer treatments to Scotland, giving our young patients the best chance of survival and recovery.”
