Kirky Marathon Returns To Ibrox Stadium

Tue 30th June 2026

The Captain Kirky Marathon is a charity run, walk, or cycle from Ibrox Stadium to Kilwinning Sports Club which returned to Ibrox at the weekend and started with a lap of the pitch.

The event was originally created in memory of Craig Kirkwood, a keen Rangers fan who was tragically killed aged just 17, by his dad Colin, mum Alison, brother David, and sister Sarah. It became a special annual occasion that brought Craig’s friends and family together to celebrate his life while raising money for charity. From 2011 to 2017, Colin proudly organised the event each year, making it a meaningful tradition for everyone involved.

Sadly, Colin, a former Rangers Charity Foundation trustee and recipient of the Julie Wales Special Recognition Award for his incredible fundraising efforts, passed away in 2017 after a battle with cancer. This year would have been Colin’s 60th birthday, and to mark this special milestone Alison, David, and Sarah have decided to bring the Captain Kirky Marathon back.

The event once again brought people together to run, walk, or cycle the route from Ibrox Stadium to Kilwinning Sports Club – celebrating both Craig’s memory and Colin’s life. 71 runners, walkers and cyclists took part and had a great day.

Daivd Kirkwood said:

“The Captain Kirky Marathon is a great way to raise money for such great causes but it’s also a way to get all of Craig and Colin’s friends and family together to remember them and keep their spirits alive.

“Every time we hold this event we’re blown away by the support from our family and friends and the generosity of local businesses and local community, this year was no different.

“This year we have raised over £11,800 for charity. I know Colin and Craig would be so proud of this achievement.

“Being able to do this from Ibrox to Kilwinning Sports Club is a huge honour for us as it is two places that were very important to Colin and Craig and we’d like to thank Louise, David and the rest of the team at the Rangers Charity Foundation for all their help with organising and allowing us into Ibrox before we started. We’d also like to thank Colin and the rest of the team at Kilwinning Community Sports Club for all their help letting this event take place and the use of their facilities.

“Once again we’d like to thank everyone for their support and donations.”

The event team fundraising link is still open and all funds raised will be split between the Rangers Charity Foundation and Kilwinning Sports Club.
