Urgent Foodbank Collection on Saturday

Mon 15th August 2016

The Rangers Charity Foundation is making an urgent appeal to fans to help support our local food banks by bringing some non-perishable food items to the match against Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday 20 August.

Local food banks have reached crisis point with stocks extremely low at both Hillington Park Parish Church and Ibrox Parish Church, which have been feeding hundreds of people a week from Govan, Craigton, Pollok and Ibrox.

The Main Centre at Ibrox Parish Church has been regularly supported in the past by the Foundation and our supporters but help is once again urgently required.

The Foundation has organised a food collection point near to the Megastore in the lead up to kick-off on Saturday where volunteers will collect donations from fans.  There will also be a can collection in support of the Food Bank at the turnstiles and we are also seeking volunteers to help out with this on the day.

The Food Bank welcomes all kinds of non-perishable food items but would be particularly pleased to receive donations of UHT milk, pasta sauce, tinned tomatoes and tinned vegetables.  A full list of suggested items can be found below.

Claire McCunnie from the Ibrox Parish Church centre commented, “Stocks are really very low, we’ve no juice or tomatoes left and very little veg and milk.

“I think the school holidays have had an impact, with parents having to feed children who would normally receive a free school meal.  Demand has definitely increased over the summer and we’re in desperate need of stock.”

Connal Cochrane, Director of the Rangers Charity Foundation added, “The Foundation has supported the Glasgow South West Food Bank for over 2 years now and the fans have always been incredibly generous in their support.  We were overwhelmed last season by the amount of food donated at our matchday collection and the staff at the Food Bank at Ibrox were very relieved to see the empty shelves replenished.”

“We hope fans will show their charitable spirit once again and help local people in dire need by bringing along a few groceries to the game against Motherwell.”

If you have any questions please contact the Foundation on 0141 580 8775 or e-mail rangerscharity@rangers.co.uk.  If you would like to help but are not attending the game on Saturday we will accept food donations to the Foundation offices at Argyle House, Ibrox Stadium during office hours between now and 5pm on Friday.
