Autism Friendly Football

The Autism Friendly Football programme gives children and teenagers on the autism spectrum the chance to play football in a welcoming, structured and fun environment. Delivered by the Rangers Charity Foundation, these sessions take place every Wednesday at Pro Soccer Newton Mearns, Rouken Glen Park.

What the Programme Offers

Participants benefit from:

  • Weekly sessions tailored for children aged 5-9 at 6pm, and ages 10-16 at 7pm.

  • Coaches trained specifically to support young people on the autistic spectrum, making the sessions inclusive, safe and fun.

  • A chance for children to build football skills, friendships and confidence. In addition, parents and carers can meet, socialise and find shared support and understanding.

Why the Programme Matters

Many children and teens on the autism spectrum struggle to find sport-based activities where they feel comfortable, included and understood. However, through this programme:

  • They get access to football in a setting tailored to their needs.

  • Coaches help them engage, learn and build confidence through sport.

  • Families also gain a supportive network and a chance to connect with others in similar situations.

  • Furthermore, participants often report stronger social skills, more confidence and greater enjoyment of physical activity.

Who Can Join?

The programme is open to children and young people aged 5 to 16 who are on the autism spectrum. No previous experience is needed — just an interest in football and a desire to take part. Sessions are free, inclusive and designed for all abilities.
