Christmas Cheer for Local Charities
Tue 22nd December 2015
The Rangers Charity Foundation has been busy spreading some Christmas cheer throughout the city by helping out a range of local charities and causes.
Rangers defender Dominic Ball and Foundation Director Connal Cochrane attended Glasgow City Mission’s City Centre Project to help staff hand out hot food and drinks to those attending, many of whom are affected by homelessness, loneliness and hardship.
Glasgow City Mission’s Winter Night Shelter is the Foundation’s Community Charity Partner for this season and thanks to the support of fans who took part in our recent Big Sleep Outs, the Foundation has raised an incredible £60,000 (and counting!) for this vital cause.
The first team squad also visited another partner, popping in to the Royal Hospital for Children where Rangers Manager Mark Warburton and Captain Lee Wallace presented a cheque for £10,000 to Yorkhill Children’s Charity on behalf of the Foundation.
Mark Warburton also recorded a special message for Social Bite, encouraging people to buy a Christmas meal for the homeless, and the Foundation donated £500 to the cause, which could pay for 100 Christmas meals.
Generous fans handed in toys and games to our Christmas Toy Appeal and the Foundation also bought board games, kids slippers, annuals and DVDs to gift to local Toy Banks in the Ibrox and Govan area, including the Govan Salvation Army, Glasgow Cares Toy Bank and the Toy Bank for the Glasgow South West Food Bank
We made sure Alzheimer Scotland’s Dementia cafes in Glasgow were looking festive with donations of table decorations, crackers, chocolates and biscuits for the Christmas activities at the cafes over the holiday period and rounded off a great week with a cash donation of £500 together with a £500 food shop going to the Glasgow South West Food Bank.
Tinned meat, potatoes and vegetables, Christmas puddings, crackers and basics such as tea, coffee and UHT milk were all delivered to ensure local people can have a proper meal on Christmas Day.
Foundation Director Connal Cochrane commented, “It’s been a great week here at the Foundation supporting so many worthwhile local causes.
“The team’s annual Christmas visit to the Children’s Hospital is always special and we were delighted to hand over a £10,000 donation which will pay for a Christmas party for the children as well as toys and games for the wards, other seasonal activities throughout the year and outdoor play equipment.
“Thanks to Dominic Ball too for coming along to Glasgow City Mission to help out and meet those who are using the service or who are affected by homelessness. The work of the mission is so important all year round, but over the winter months, and particularly at Christmas, it is absolutely vital.
“We’ve also tried to do as much as possible for local charities this year. I’d like to thank all the fans who handed in second hand toys and selection boxes, which have been gratefully received by community causes. Once again, our supporters have shown tremendous generousity.”
