Confidence, Connection, and Competition: Hub in the Community Tournaments Score Big with School Pupils

Mon 23rd June 2025

Our Hub in the Community Tournaments took place at the Ibrox Community Complex once again this year. Over the course of May and June, pupils from all year groups from our four Hub Schools; Govan High, Whitehill Secondary, Knightswood Secondary and Drumchapel High, took the field to compete in six different tournaments.

Each school had a shot at winning silverware, but it was Whitehill who finished off the series with the most trophies, picking up three over the course of tournaments.

As part of a Community Hub model, originally adapted from the successful Manchester United initiative, a full-time Foundation Community Hub Officer is based in each school to work with pupils from all year groups as part of groups or on a one-to-one basis. They support with the transition from primary to secondary school and into positive destinations when pupils are ready to leave.

With the combined efforts of all five Community Hub Officers, the tournaments were a great success once again this year.

S4 pupil, Kingsley from Whitehill said:

“When Jamie our first Hub Officer joined the school, everything got better. I feel like we’re getting so many new opportunities. When you work with him as well you can tell he cares about us which goes a long way. Anyone will tell you that if you’re struggling or need help with things then the Hub Officers are the people to speak to.”

S2 Student Layla from Knightswood added:

“Today’s been good. The team was playing well but it’s been hard in this heat. Our Hub Officer Mark is great. He’s fun. It’s good to be able to come out of school and do things like this.”

Reflecting on the tournament Govan High School Community Hub Officer and Coordinator, Scott Smith said:

“It’s fantastic to see the continued impact of the Hub in the Community programme, not just in the classroom but out on the pitch as well. The tournament was a brilliant way to bring pupils together, celebrate their hard work, and reinforce the values we promote every day in our schools.”

“The tournament wasn’t just about winning, it was about building confidence, encouraging teamwork, and creating lasting memories for the pupils involved. Events like this highlight how sport can be a powerful tool for engagement, connection, and growth.”

On top of delivering special events outside of the school environment, the Hub in the Community programme also delivers in the classroom. All five Community Hub Officers work with pupils to support attainment whilst also delivering SQA qualifications. Incentives are designed to help boost attendance and to support them in their learning.
